Before artificial turf, 1935

These muddy but undaunted players took part in an annual country hockey tournament, held in Auckland in atrocious weather during winter 1935. Such scenes have become rare in New Zealand hockey since the widespread introduction of artificial surfaces made of synthetic fibres. This allows all-weather play, and has increased the speed of the game and encouraged different stick techniques.
