Sydenham Hockey Club, 1898

In 2012 Christchurch's Sydenham Hockey Club claimed to be the oldest hockey club in the southern hemisphere. It was formed in 1898, when this photo was taken of the 'Saturday Seniors' team in the original club uniform of white polo-necked sweaters with diagonal green sashes. The captain, T. A. Williams (seated at centre, with moustache), was a Welsh Baptist minister. In 1902 he told the Thames Star that 'my favourite winter game is hockey and ... the Sydenham Hockey Club, with whose first life I had something to do, is now, I think, the strongest in the colony'.
