Sports day for New Zealanders, South African War

Sports day for New Zealanders, South African War

A New Zealand trooper competes in the high jump at a sports day during the South African War (1899–1902). Such competitions were important to keep up morale and unit spirit, particularly during the long periods of inactivity that inevitably occur in war. New Zealand troops also took part in a variety of sporting competitions against British and other colonial units and occasionally against local teams.
