Backyard vegetable garden

Backyard vegetable garden

From colonial times most houses sported backyard vegetable gardens, providing cheap and fresh produce for dinner tables. The large size of suburban sections meant some gardens could be substantial, such as this one in Lower Hutt in the 1940s. Since the late 20th century vegetable gardens have become less common, although they experienced a revival of sorts during the 2010s recession.
