The 1956 census provided a snapshot of home production of vegetables. Over 50% of New Zealand households grew at least some of their potatoes and other vegetables – a figure that fell to just under 50% in cities. A similar snapshot in 1971 found that home production of vegetables had declined. In that year just 34% of households grew some of their potatoes and 51% grew some of their other vegetable requirements.
