Hātepe bach

Image
Hātepe bach

This 1940s-era bach is seen at Hātepe on the shores of Lake Taupō in 1985. Baches were small, simple structures that were often built by their owners as a coastal, riverine or lakeside holiday home. As waterside property increased in value from the 1990s, many New Zealanders were priced out of bach ownership. Those that were built showcased their owners' wealth, and were often larger than standard suburban houses.
