At the age of 44, javelin thrower Stan Lay represented New Zealand at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland. After representing New Zealand at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Lay broke the recognised javelin world record in 1930. He won gold at that year’s Empire Games in Ontario and silver at the 1938 Empire Games in Sydney. The veteran athlete finished sixth in Auckland.
