85-year-old A. H. (Alfred) Reed completes his walk from Cape Rēinga to Bluff, in 1961. Reed was the founder of the publishers A. H. & A. W. Reed and a well-known writer. His long-distance walks were legendary. He walked from East Cape to Cape Egmont at age 86, climbing Mt Taranaki during the walk. He climbed Mt Ngāuruhoe when he was 85. At 88 Reed walked a circuit from Dunedin to Christchurch over Arthur's Pass, down the West Coast and back to Dunedin via Haast Pass. At the age of 89 he walked from Sydney to Melbourne. He died in 1975, a few weeks after his 99th birthday.
