Alfred Reed reaches Bluff from Cape Rēinga

85-year-old A. H. (Alfred) Reed completes his walk from Cape Rēinga to Bluff in 1961. Reed was the founder of the publishers A. H. & A. W. Reed and a well-known writer. His long-distance walks were legendary. He walked from East Cape to Cape Egmont at the age of 86, climbing Mt Taranaki on the way. He climbed Mt Ngāuruhoe when he was 85. At 88, Reed walked from Dunedin to Christchurch, then over Arthurs Pass, down the West Coast and back to Dunedin via Haast Pass. At the age of 89 he walked from Sydney to Melbourne. Reed died in 1975, a few weeks after his 99th birthday.
