The flag is hoisted at the Bell family settlement on the north side of Raoul Island on 17 August 1887, the day that New Zealand annexed the Kermadecs. Although Thomas Bell and his family were the island’s only occupants at the time, they were given title to only a small area of land. A new group of settlers arrived in the 1890s, but they gradually moved away, leaving only the Bell family on the island.
