In order to practise law in New Zealand, it is necessary first to obtain a law degree, and then undergo further training in order to be admitted to the High Court. This procedure is called admission to the bar. The formal ceremony takes place at a court, and new lawyers are presented by a practising lawyer. Here, Whiti Hereaka, who is being admitted to the bar, is accompanied by her colleague, practising lawyer Matewai Tukapua. Both are wearing formal legal attire of wigs and gowns.
