In February 2006, 101-year-old Mick Goldsbro', New Zealand's oldest and longest-serving justice of the peace (JP), was honoured by a special function at the Hamilton High Court. He passed away in April of that year. JPs provide a community service, witnessing documents, certifying copies of documents and taking declarations, affidavits or affirmations for members of the public. Four hundred specially trained judicial JPs sit in the District Court to hear minor traffic and summary offences. They also preside over preliminary hearings for certain offences and consider bail applications, and requests for remands and adjournments.
