New Zealand soldiers in Bailleul, France, 1917

New Zealand’s history of fighting in European wars has been critical to its ongoing relationship with European nations. Here New Zealand troops march through Bailleul, a French town near the border with Belgium, in May 1917. Marching behind a band playing trombones, trumpets and drums, they are returning from training. About 18,000 New Zealand men died during the First World War, two-thirds of them in France and Belgium.
