The European commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, is greeted with a hongi (traditional Māori greeting) during her visit to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington in June 2007. The strong links between New Zealand and Europe include a shared colonial history in the Pacific. This underpins a shared aim of promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia–Pacific region, where Britain, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand have all had colonies in the 20th century.
