Cliff Hughes, MNZM for services to woodchopping

Appointment to any of the five levels of the New Zealand Order of Merit is awarded for meritorious service or for becoming distinguished by eminence, talents, contributions or other merits in any field. Clifford Hughes was made a member of the order in 2008 for services to wood chopping — one of two honours given for that endeavour in the period 1997–2011. At the time he was 72 years old, and had been competing in and running the sport nationally for close to 60 years.
