Soldiers of New Zealand's Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) on patrol in the northern region of Bamyan province, Afghanistan, July 2009. New Zealand sent military forces to Afghanistan in 2001. The 122-person PRT was deployed in Bamyan from 2003 to 2013 on six-month rotations. One of its primary roles was to work with the Afghan National Police and local authorities to maintain security.
