In the 1990s universities became more entrepreneurial and competed for students. A 1995 advertising campaign by the University of Otago exemplifies this competitive environment. Otago publicity officer Claire Cook (left) and graduate Colleen Youngquest travelled to Wellington and ran an information stall at Queensgate Mall in Lower Hutt. The T-shirt held by Youngquest contains an unflattering caricature of Queen Victoria, after whom Wellington's resident university – Victoria University of Wellington – is named.
