Te Kura Māori o Te Kūiti, takiwā o te tau 1900

Nō te tau 1898 ka whakatuwheratia te Kura Māori o Te Kūiti ki te Rohe Pōtae o Maniapoto. I taua tau ka mea te kaiwhakatewha kura i tāna pūrongo, ‘Te āhua nei kua whakakorea te kiriweti a ngāi Māori kāore anō kia tahuri ki te ao Pākehā, e mea nei rātou ināianei, he mea pai te kura ki ngā Māori. Ahakoa tō rātou piri ki te ao o ngā tīpuna me ngā tikanga o nehe, kua huri ngā whakaaro mō te kura.’ (Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives 1899, E-2, p. 6). Ahakoa ko te kaupapa o ngā kura he whāngai i ngā mātauranga hou ki ngā tamariki Māori, i tae anō ētahi tamariki Pākehā ki ēnei kura. Inā rā ētahi Pākehā kei te whakaahua nei.

Hello, I have a copy of this image from the Whitehead Collection at the Te Aha Museum in Kaitaia The photo was taken in 1906, or at least I believe so as my 1st cousin 3x removed Sarah Annie Whitehead is the teacher standing at the front. She sent the copy held at the Museum to her sister Mabel, signing the back with the date 27 Mar 1906. It might have been the day she sent the image. I can send a copy of the back if you would like?
