Alliance women, 1996

In 1996, after the first election under the mixed-member proportional (MMP) system, the Alliance had 13 members of Parliament. Leader Jim Anderton claimed that it was the first party in the Western world to have more women MPs than men. The seven women are shown here (from left): Sandra Lee, Alamein Kopu (both Mana Motuhake), Jeanette Fitzsimons (Green), Pam Corkery, Laila Harré (both NewLabour), Phillida Bunkle (Green) and Liz Gordon (NewLabour).
