Esme Tombleson (far left), who was born and raised in Australia, was the member of Parliament for Gisborne from 1960 to 1972. A tireless advocate of the region’s interests, she remained active in local affairs through the 1970s and 1980s. Here, she meets master carver John Taiapa and two student carvers, Korako Arahanga (Ngai Tahu) and Junior Honotapu (Ngāti Porou), on the occasion of the Māori Women's Welfare League conference in Gisborne, in 1970.
