The Australian frigate HMAS Ballarat (in the foreground) and the New Zealand frigate HMNZS Te Kaha conduct a training manoeuvre in Hawke Bay in 2008. Despite the end of the ANZUS alliance, Australia and New Zealand continued to work closely together on defence matters, especially following the establishment of the Closer Defence Relations programme in 1991. A major focus was on making the forces of the two countries interoperable by sharing equipment purchases and training exercises, and making force structures complementary.
