When Ministry for the Environment communications manager Madeleine Setchell lost her job, a State Services Commission inquiry resulted in the ministry’s head, Hugh Logan, losing his annual bonus. Setchell had resigned after being told she needed to move to a less sensitive position or leave when Environment Minister David Benson-Pope discovered that her partner was the press secretary for John Key, leader of the opposition. State Services Commissioner Mark Prebble described Logan as failing to act as a fair employer. Prebble also docked 2.5% of his own salary, on the grounds that he had failed to make sure staff dealing with the matter were aware of the minister’s comments.
