The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet provides policy and administrative support to the prime minister and the cabinet. In 2006 Mike Ryan, a messenger in the department, was found to have leaked sensitive commercial information to the telecommunications company Telecom. Maarten Wevers (left), the department's chief executive, and Mark Prebble, the state services commissioner, are shown at a press conference on the leak in May 2006. Prime Minister Helen Clark refused to accept Wevers’ offer to resign over the matter.
