Duncan Kay, a ranger and team leader with the Department of Conservation, holds Nightcrawler, a rare rowi kiwi which he is relocating from the West Coast to Queen Charlotte Sound in June 2010. The Department of Conservation maintains national parks and other outdoor facilities, and conserves animal and plant species such as kiwi. It mainly delivers goods and services to the public, rather than policy advice to the government on conservation and environmental issues, which is the responsibility of the Ministry for the Environment.
