Rabbi Abraham Sternfein blows the shofar (ceremonial ram's-horn trumpet) to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins in September. In 1996 Polish-born Sternfein was the acting rabbi at Wellington's orthodox Jewish synagogue in Webb Street. The Wellington Hebrew Congregation began meeting in 1843.

Rabbi Sternfein, who passed away in 2002, was my grandfather and it was a a lovely surprise to find this photograph
