Sanitation: Palmerston North sewer pipes, about 1905

These men are taking a break from installing the sewer pipes in Palmerston North. The installation of a sewerage system was an important initiative in any town or city, and thus worthy of a commemorative photograph. Sewerage systems had a significant and positive impact on public health because they contributed to a reduction in infectious diseases such as typhoid.
