The widening gap in mortality rates between Māori and Pacific people and European and other ethnicities in the 1980s and 1990s was probably related to the economic restructuring of this period. These changes had a significant negative impact on Māori and Pacific employment and income. These workers are leaving the Tōmoana freezing works near Hastings after its closure in 1994.
