The Whakatāne crematorium was opened in October 2009 in the grounds of Hillcrest Cemetery, between Whakatāne and Ōhope. Its innovative waka design creates an environment around the main buildings where people can gather both before and after the funeral. The crematorium is operated by the Whakatāne District Council and arrangements to use the facility have to be made through a funeral director. In 2019, the cost of using the crematorium and the chapel for a full service for an adult on a weekday was $695.
