Wrist lock no. 2

Wrist lock no. 2

This photograph from David Cossgrove's Peace Scouting for girls, published in 1910, demonstrates a move that would make a scoundrel who tried to grab a young woman 'howl with pain' and, if done quickly, could break his wrist. Such self-defence advice for women was before its time and in keeping with the Girl Peace Scouts' motto, 'Be always ready'. Girl Peace Scouts became part of the global Girl Guides movement in 1923.
