The sudden enforced leisure resulting from retirement, illness or other causes can prove a burden, especially for men accustomed to being active and absorbed in their work. The Menz Shed movement is a national network of self-help groups to help men handle sudden changes in their lives. It began in Australia and the first New Zealand Menz Shed was formed in Hamilton in 2008. One member says they work together on projects 'where the strengths of individuals and a team enhance what we can do and achieve as individuals'.
