A tramper stands besides a giant fissure in the karst limestone at the base of Mt Owen, the highest mountain in Kahurangi National Park. This area was the filming location for the Dimrill Gate of Moria in The fellowship of the ring (2001), the first movie in the Lord of the rings trilogy. Some of the largest caves in the southern hemisphere lie beneath the Mt Owen massif.
