New Zealander Dr John Money (right) is seen here with two friends, historian Michael King and author Janet Frame. He was one of the world's leading authorities on gender identity and gender reassignment surgery, although many of his methods are now regarded as highly unethical. Money was born in Morrinsville in 1921 and earned a PhD from Harvard University in 1952. He was the author of many books, including Gay, straight, and in-between: the sexology of erotic orientation (1988). John Money died in 2006.
