Girls gardening at Fareham House

Fareham House for girls, near Featherston, was the only institution specifically for Māori. It opened in 1944 and took in girls who had got into trouble. In the 1960s it was turned into a home for young girls of all ethnicities. Gardening was a chore common to most residential institutions.
