Laying the foundation stone, Dunedin Lyceum, 1881

From the 1880s Dunedin had an organised group of freethinkers, nearly all of them male. This photograph shows the laying of the foundation stone of their own building, the Lyceum, on Dowling Street in 1881. The president of the Dunedin Freethought Association was the lawyer and politician Robert Stout.
