Kōrero: Prisoner support and advocacy

Several detention camps were set up for conscientious objectors during the Second World War. This is probably the camp at Hautū, near Tūrangi. Among those imprisoned was the Reverend Ormond Burton, a war hero of the First World War. Disillusioned with the outcome of the Treaty of Versailles, he publicly criticised New Zealand’s involvement in the Second World War. Burton was repeatedly arrested and imprisoned for making public speeches condemning the war. He later went on to work with the Howard League for Penal Reform.
