Workers stand outside the Parkvale Co-operative Dairy Company in the Wairarapa in 1904. The number of New Zealand dairy factories peaked at about 600 in 1920 – about 85% of which were cooperatives. From then on more efficient transport and economies of scale in processing led to larger factories (and cooperatives) and the closure of smaller ones.
