Crown Lynn Potteries began producing tableware when the First World War prevented the importing of crockery, and was an established business by the late 1940s. With the availability of imported tableware restricted by import licensing, Crown Lynn was the largest pottery manufacturer in the southern hemisphere by 1960. It employed 450 people and produced 240,000 pieces a week. These workers are packing cups for distribution, probably in the 1950s or 1960s.
