Miri and Chris Dessa (extreme right) share their large home in the Auckland suburb of Sandringham with 11 other family members. Nine of them, including one of the Dessas’ children, one in-law and seven grandchildren, appear in this 2006 photo. Increased ethnic diversity, as well as difficult economic conditions, contributed to broadening the range of household types in New Zealand.
