A domestic servant carries a tea tray out to two women at Mansion House on Kawau Island in 1901. Employers of servants, like many other groups, were prompted to organise when their workers did. In late 1906 or 1907 they came together to form the Committee of Employers of Domestic Employees. When the domestic workers’ union failed, the employers’ union seems to have sunk without a trace as those with servants returned to domestic rather than industrial pursuits.
