‘Keep to the left’ sign, Dunedin, 1926

Codes of conduct evolve in cities to make them run smoothly. Keeping to the left on busy footpaths is a common code. Despite the prominent sign and relatively clear footpath, the woman heading towards the photographer has strayed to the right.
