Hoisting the Union Jack, 1900

Hoisting the Union Jack, 1900

The Union Jack is raised over Mangaia in the Cook Islands, at a ceremony in October 1900 where Cook Islanders and Niueans were declared British subjects. The following year both the Cook Islands and Niue became New Zealand territories. They later gained a degree of independence but their people still have the rights of New Zealand citizens.
