Sol Square, Christchurch

The 1990s saw a revitalisation of inner-city living and life, leading to an explosion of street cafés, restaurants and nightspots. In Christchurch, the former warehousing district between Lichfield and High streets was transformed in the early 2000s to a range of residential, retail and hospitality uses. One popular area was Sol (South of Lichfield) Square, featuring bustling restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Sol Square was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. In 2020 the area had not yet recovered
