A busload of Japanese visitors photograph the spot at Kings Wharf, Wellington, from which Japanese explorers left for Antarctica in the early 20th century. Japanese tourism grew from the 1970s, but the market presented challenges – for example, Japanese found New Zealand food tasteless. Due to language barriers and cultural preference, most preferred travelling by bus in guided parties. By 1985 there were more Japanese than British visitors to New Zealand.
