Some towns that were laid out in the 19th century turned their back on ports and waterways. In the 21st century some of them are trying to remedy this by re-orientating their outlook. New Plymouth built a popular coastal walkway close to its central business district. The walkway’s centrepiece is the ‘Wind wand’, a kinetic sculpture designed by artist Len Lye.
