When large employers close down or drastically change their operations, their employees may need to move elsewhere to find new jobs. The coal-mining town of Rotowaro, in Waikato, had a population of 400 before it was closed down in 1987 because the land beneath the town was wanted for more mining. The township’s buildings are disappearing under the re-growing vegetation.
