Kōrero: Department stores and shopping malls

The Warehouse

The Warehouse

The Warehouse in Palmerston North, photographed in 2009, was one of 91 stores – from Kaitāia to Invercargill – in the chain in 2020. The large discount stores have some of the characteristics of department stores, including the variety of goods for sale, organised into departments. However, the ‘red sheds’ are straightforwardly commercial compared with the deliberately luxurious feel of the department store – as shown by the famous slogan, ‘where everyone gets a bargain’. The Warehouse is often an anchor store in shopping malls.
