Blackwell’s department store in Kaiapoi, North Canterbury, was still going in the 2000s after well over a century in business. It began in 1871 as G. H. Blackwell’s Railway Store, after the railway from Lyttelton to Kaiapoi opened. Andrew Blackwell managed the store in the 2000s with his brother Michael – the fifth generation of the family to do so. Andrew believes retaining family ownership has been crucial to survival. He says community involvement and taking a personal interest in customers are important factors in the store’s continued success.
