Haurongo: Taylor, Richard

Te Herekiekie's house at Tokaanu

Image
A water colour painting of a carved Maori building

The Reverend Richard Taylor, who made this sketch of a carved whare, noted that it was built by 'Te Heuheu' (probably Iwikau Te Heuheu Tūkino III) for Te Herekiekie to symbolise the end of an argument between them, possibly over leadership of Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
