In 1986, 17-year old Marama Mateparae worked two four-hour shifts a week at the fast-food restaurant McDonald’s. She used her wages to buy clothes and pay for entertainment and holidays. Marama liked the work and the variety of people: ‘It’s never boring,’ she said.
