Hard rock gold mining ceased in the Reefton goldfield in 1951, but in 2007 OceanaGold opened a new opencast pit in the hills east of Reefton, in the area of the old Globe-Progress workings. The pit can be seen on the far right, with the processing works in the centre. Gold-bearing ore was concentrated at this site, and then transported by rail to Otago, where it was treated along with ore from the Macraes mine. The Reefton mine closed in 2016 and the area is being restored.
