West Coast climbers

Alex Graham (left, mislabelled as P. Graham) was a professional mountain guide, Henry Newton (centre) was the vicar at Ross, and Ebenezer Teichelmann was a Hokitika doctor. The three climbed extensively on the western side of the Southern Alps in the first decade of the 20th century. This photograph, from one of Teichelmann’s albums, shows the trio relaxing after completing the first crossing of the Harper Saddle, below Aoraki/Mt Cook, in February 1905.
